Cloud Computing 101 - Lesson 1

Cloud Computing 101 - Lesson 1

What is cloud computing ❓

Cloud computing is simply hosting all your computing resources over the internet. In essence, instead of buying, owning and maintaining physical servers and data centers, you can access these technological services over the internet.

Reasons for cloud computing 🀷

1. Cost

Cloud computing eliminates the capital expense of buying IT infrastructure needed for the running of a company. Fun fact, it also reduces the number of expertise needed to run your infrastructure.

2. Reliability

Cloud computing makes data backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity easier and less expensive because data can be mirrored at multiple redundant sites on the cloud provider’s network.

3. Security

Most cloud service providers provide various layers of security over all their services. These security policies help protect your data, apps and infrastructure from potential threats.

4. Speed

Cloud computing makes it much easier to set up any computing resource within minutes with simple mouse clicks. This gives businesses lots of flexibility and eliminates the pressure of planning.

5. Scalability

This is the practice of increasing the number of servers or the size of a specific server needed to run a resource due to increased demand. This is much easier done in the cloud as compared to a physical data center.

Cloud Providers 🏬

A cloud service provider is a third-party company offering a cloud-based platform, infrastructure, application, or storage services. Much like a homeowner would pay for a utility such as electricity or gas, companies typically have to pay only for the amount of cloud services they use, as business demands require. Different cloud services providers include:

  1. Amazon Web Services
  2. Microsoft Azure
  3. Google Cloud
  4. Digital Ocean
  5. Oracle Cloud
  6. IBM Cloud

and many more
